PRESS RELEASE POLICE COUNCIL CONFIRMS ONOVO AS IGP In line with Section 215 (1) (a) of the 1999 Constitution, President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua GCFR, upon the recommendation of the Police Council, has, today 4th of August, 2009, confirmed the appointment of IGP Ogbonna Okechukwu Onovo, OON, NPM, mni, as the 14th indigenous Inspector-General of Police of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This confirmation is a further proof of the President’s commitment to the realization of the security component of the 7-Point agenda. It will be recalled that IGP Onovo was appointed Acting IGP on 24TH July, 2009, following the retirement of the former IGP, Sir (Dr.) Mike Mbama Okiro, CFR, NPM, mni, who successfully completed his tour of duty from the Nigeria Police Force. Sequel to his confirmation, IGP Onovo has reassured Nigerians of his total commitment towards making the country safe, secure and promoting equality and justice. He re-stated that, “our focus is already set as I intend to drive our energies towards sustaining many laudable initiatives of our past administration, improving on them, while charting new courses for greater achievements of the Nigeria Police Force, and the nation in general”. Finally, the IGP solicited the support and partnership of all agencies of government, sister security organizations and all well-meaning stakeholders, so that the task of securing peace and orderly development in the country would be achieved to the fullest.
